"The Plimhimmon by Moonlight" by Paul McGehee. What was it like, in the early days of Ocean City, Maryland? Today, walking the Boardwalk on a summer's night is a bright, floodlit experience, with every shop, restaurant and hotel aglow with the light of a million electric lights. But...in the early days of the 20th century, electricity was just starting to creep in to favor in the town...one by one, hotels electrified and a few streetlights appeared down by the amusement park at the southern end of the Boardwalk, but by and large Ocean City at night back then...was dark! Lantern light and candles would be your room light for the evening in some of those old hotels, until they finally were wired for electricity. And it took years to properly illuminate the length of the Boardwalk, as it was in the beginning. One of Ocean City's classic hotels, the Plimhimmon was also one of the first to be built in the early days of the Maryland seaside resort, opening her doors in 1894. Her iconic seaside design made Plimhimmon one of the prettiest structures at the beach, until the hotel was destroyed by fire in 1962. Happily her famous cupola roof remains as a reminder of the good old days, as it is now positioned on top of the Plim Plaza Hotel at 2nd Street.
