It is said that Brown used his wife Emma as the model for the lovely Juliet, in the throes of a passionate kiss from her star-crossed suitor Romeo, from the famous play written by William Shakespeare. Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) was a popular English painter in the late 19th century and was known for his scenes depicting moral and historical subjects.
