Blackwater Falls drops 62' into a rocky gorge that courses along for 8 miles through handsomely rugged mountain terrain. The "black" water comes from tannic acid seeping out of hemlock and red spruce needles coloring the water like strong tea. Local legend has it that it was first discovered by pioneering explorer Meshach Browning, who happened upon the spot while hunting in the early 19th century. The first written mention of the falls came in 1853 with the publication of David Hunter's "The Virginia Canaan". As word spread about the beautiful spot, a need arose to have a place for sightseers and hikers to stay, so a lodge was built called "The Dobbin House" in 1858. Today, Blackwater Falls State Park is one of the most visited on the East Coast boasting numerous mountain lodges where families can stay and enjoy the scenery as well as partake in camping, hiking, skiing, fishing and mountain biking.
