"Denver Over the Rooftops - 1912" by Paul McGehee. The beautiful State Capital of Colorado with the Rocky Mountains in the distance, on a snowy evening in December of 1912. Denver is sometimes referred to as the "Mile High City" because its official elevation is exactly one mile (5280 feet) above sea level. The view is from the Daniels & Fisher Tower looking southeast down 16th Street towards the Colorado State Capitol building. Towards the left one can see the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, which had just opened its doors two months previous. The towered building to the right was the Denver (Arapahoe) County Court House, built in 1883 and razed in 1934. Also visible are the Colorado State Museum (under construction), the Brown Palace Hotel and the Denver Y.M.C.A. building.
