Designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi as the statue "Liberty Enlightening the World", she was shipped in sections over the Atlantic and assembled on Bedloe's Island (now called Liberty Island) to be finally dedicated on October 28, 1886. She is a symbol of freedom; a gift to the United States from the people of France.
