Theodore Roosevelt

"Theodore Roosevelt" by Paul McGehee. Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt (1858-1919), hero of the Spanish-American War in the famous "Rough Riders" cavalry division, led the charge up San Juan hill, capturing the enemy's blockhouse and demoralizing the Spanish forces in Cuba. He later was Governor of New York, Secretary of the Navy, and Vice-President under President William McKinley. Upon McKinley's assassination in 1901, Teddy Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States, serving out McKinley's term, and winning re-election in 1904. His firm and successful overseas policies were the result of his motto, "Walk softly. But carry a big stick!".
