"Boothbay
Harbor - 1930" by Paul McGehee. A 1930's view of the famous harbor on the
coast of Maine,
in the twilight days of commercial sailing ships. Coastal schooners,
the workhorses of the American maritime trade, were becoming fewer and
fewer in number each year during the 1930's. The large, wooden-hulled
schooners had sailed the waters of coastal Maine for more than a
century as vessels of commerce, many of them involved in the lumber
trade. With the advent of steam-powered craft, however, these elegant
three-, four-, five- or six-masted wooden ships became obsolete and
vanished from the harbors and horizons. It was truly the end of an era.
