"Monkeying
Around" by Paul McGehee depicts a pair of playful monkeys in a tree.
Vervet Monkeys are native to Africa but populate several Caribbean
islands thousands of miles away across the broad expanse of the
Atlantic Ocean. How did they travel so far from home? Back in the
colonial era when sailing ships were running the trade route between
Africa and the New World, the sailors would take monkeys along on the
voyages to keep as pets...and sometimes, when they were in port, they
would get loose! That is how the Vervet Monkeys have now become a
common sight on the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts, Nevis, Jamaica,
Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba and Barbados as well as the islands of
the Bahamas and Bermuda. They are vegetarian, and known for their
almost human-like characteristics. This pair (drawn by the artist on
the island of Nevis) was observed picking through fruit trees while
chattering and leaping from limb to limb. They are fascinating to
watch! "Monkeying Around"
