"Times Square - 1954" by Paul McGehee. New York City's famous intersection is popularly known as the "Crossroads of the World". Ablaze with the glow of neon signs, it is a highlight of Midtown Manhattan and a must-see for tourists to the Big Apple. Times Square is located at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, and stretches from West 42nd Street to West 47th Street. Originally known as Longacre Square, it officially became Times Square in 1904 when the New York Times newspaper moved into the Times Building, now known as One Times Square. Each year on the night of December 31st, thousands gather at Times Square to watch the ball drop signalling the advent of the new year. It has always been a center for commerce and entertainment, and is the site of several luxury hotels. Pictured in this 1954 view are the Hotel Astor to the left, and the Hotel Claridge to the right, next to the famous 'smoking billboard' sign at street level. To this day Times Square remains one of the most populated tourist sites in New York City both day and night. "Times Square - 1954" is faithfully reproduced from Paul's original color pencil and acrylic artwork in a limited edition of 2,000 hand-signed prints.
