city of Rome, Italy is the historic walled enclave known as The Vatican
City State, better known as Vatican City. At only 110 acres in area,
and with a population of just over 800, Vatican City is the smallest
independent state in the world. It is best known as the residence of
the Pope, the leader of the Catholic faith. St. Peter's Basilica, an
architectural masterpiece of the Renaissance period recognizable by its
huge domed roof, was built between 1506 and 1626 and is the largest
church structure in the world. The evening reflections of the
illuminated Basilica in the shimmering waters of the Tiber River are a
sight to behold. The Basilica holds the remains of many Popes,
including those of Peter the Apostle, the first Pope. The Sistine
Chapel is located next to St. Peter's in the Apostolic Palace and is
famous for its intricately-painted ceiling frescoes by the legendary
artist Michelangelo, created between the years 1508-1512. The ancient
Ponte Sant'Angelo bridge was built by the Emperor Hadrian, completed in
134 AD and leads to Castel Sant'Angelo towards the south. The
pedestrian bridge is famous for its ten statues of angels, commissioned
in 1669 by Pope Clement IX. Vatican City is truly one of the most
beautiful, historic, and spiritually inspiring places in the world.
