"Harbor
Inn - Ocean City, MD" by Paul McGehee. An moonlit evening view of the
famous Harbor Inn, the oldest bar in the beach resort town of Ocean
City, Maryland.
Built in the 1920's as a local store near the fish camps, it was
started by the Farrell family (Irish and Emma). It was run by Mrs. Emma
while her husband Irish worked as a horse trainer at the Riddle Farm.
Irish helped to train the winning race horses Man-o-War and War
Admiral. Mrs. Emma decided, after the end of Prohibition, to turn the
store into a bar, and was issued License #1 by the town of Ocean City
when the Harbor Inn opened in 1935. It has run continuously since then,
under three generations of family. It is a favorite with tourists and
locals alike, and is famous for its ceiling with dollar bills from all
over tacked to it. Visitors are encouraged to add to the dollar
collection, which in turn ends up being gathered together and donated
to charities such as St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the local Humane
Society. They also raise funds and collect playthings for the Toys for
Tots organization each Christmas. The friendly staff will welcome you
on your next visit to the beach! Be sure not to miss visiting Ocean
City's historic Harbor Inn, 216 Somerset Street...open since 1935, it's
one of the most unique places in Ocean City.
