"Old
Fisherman's Wharf - 1915" by Paul McGehee. The famous San Francisco
waterfront as it appeared over a century ago. The State of California
designated the area between the foot of Taylor and Leavenworth Streets
back in 1900 to be for commercial fishing boats, many captained by
Italian and Chinese immigrants who were known for painting their
vessels in bright colors. It has always been one of the most
picturesque spots in San Francisco. Instead of making sales of their
catch from their boats, they now had a dedicated area in which were
built stalls to sell fish and crabs directly to the public along the
docks. The main buildings in this 1915 view of the Fisherman's Free
Market burned two years later in 1917...in recent years it has
been the site of large seafood restaurants to serve the many tourists
who flock to the area.
"Old Fisherman's Wharf - 1915" is faithfully
reproduced
as an archival-quality print from
McGehee's original color pencil and acrylic artwork, each hand-signed by the artist.
