Coastal schooners, the workhorses of the American maritime trade, were becoming fewer and fewer in number each year during the 1930's. The large, wooden-hulled schooners had sailed the waters of coastal Maine for more than a century as vessels of commerce, many of them involved in the lumber trade. With the advent of steam-powered craft, however, these elegant three-, four-, five- or six-masted wooden ships became obsolete and vanished from the harbors and horizons.
